
Peel, tack and shear describe different behaviors. A tape can perform strongly in one test and only moderately in another because the adhesive is balancing wet-out, internal strength and backing behavior.
Peel Adhesion
Peel tests measure the force needed to remove tape from a defined surface at a specified angle and speed. ASTM D3330 includes several pressure-sensitive tape configurations. Results depend on the test panel, dwell, angle, backing stiffness and rate.
Tack
Tack describes how readily an adhesive forms a bond with short contact and light pressure. It can matter for fast packaging, uneven surfaces or low-pressure application, but a high tack value does not automatically mean high long-term holding power.
Shear Holding
Shear methods assess resistance to a load applied parallel to the bonded surface. They help reveal cohesive strength and resistance to sliding or creep under the stated condition.
Why Numbers Cannot Be Compared Blindly
- Different substrates produce different wet-out and failure modes.
- Dwell time changes how the adhesive develops contact.
- Temperature and humidity affect viscoelastic behavior.
- Different units, specimen widths and methods can make values look similar when they are not.
How Buyers Should Use Data
First confirm method and conditions. Then compare candidates using the same protocol. Finally, run an application trial on the real surface. Laboratory data supports selection; it does not replace end-use validation.
